Welcome to Earthship country! Out on the mesa near Taos – the big, flat, windswept plain between the mountains – people live in Earthships: completely off-grid homes built into the ground, with the back buried in the earth and the front facing the sun for most of the day.
We were lucky enough to be shown round by Alicia, who lives in this one. She’s a talented artist – many of the paintings are hers – and she’s done all the incredible mosaic tiling herself. Wait until you see the bathroom: a shower that becomes a bathtub when you pop the plug in. It’s warm inside, it’s beautiful, and she has absolutely everything she needs. I was blown away.
