On my way to one covered bridge, I stumbled across another – one of those “oh my God” moments, and one of those things we all want to see in America. And then I got to drive through it!
The frustrating thing about driving myself is that I can’t take pictures as I go, so I kept pulling over on quiet country roads. It’s so different up here from Texas and New Mexico: beautifully green, with every field planted. The leaves weren’t even on the trees when I left home, and I know the grass has been cut a fair few times since.
I did a driving tour of the Gettysburg battlefields, where the Civil War battles raged, after a very nice man told me the best route (I also managed to turn onto a road the wrong way – let’s hope that’s my last silly mistake). Then I spent hours just turning off down random lanes through the Pennsylvania countryside before heading back into Maryland. Every time I get back in the car, I feel a little more confident.
