Over 100 miles of beautiful blue mountains. I drove two hours out of Frederick through fantastic countryside to reach Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive, which runs along the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

It’s beautiful in a completely different way from the desert – lush, rolling and green, with the birds and the bees humming away. I’m running out of superlatives! This is another part of the country I’d always wanted to see. There’s no phone signal up here, so you lot are the people I’m talking to all day.

A quick history lesson from one of the information boards: sadly, around 95% of Shenandoah’s hemlock trees have died, killed by a pest called the hemlock woolly adelgid. On a brighter note, I drove hundreds of miles today without a single pothole – a joy! Then back through Virginia into Maryland. Roxy, I’m coming home!
