I haven’t had a cocktail yet, I promise – but here’s a stream of consciousness for you!
The Odyssey, part two. I didn’t know there’d be a part two of my review, but 24 hours later I still can’t get the film out of my head. There aren’t many films that get me to the cinema; the only other one I’ve seen in IMAX was Dunkirk, which stayed with me so long it took me two years to watch it again. What I wanted to add is just how relevant the themes of Homer’s Odyssey are today – which is why that story has stuck around for 3,000 years.
A film recommendation: one scene in The Odyssey I assumed was CGI used a special-effects technique from An American Werewolf in London. I grew up in Hampstead and much of it was filmed around Hampstead Heath. I adore it. It might have dated, but watch it.
A book recommendation: Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada, written just after the war. Seek out an English translation – it opened my eyes to what ordinary Germans went through. A very different angle.
An accessorising tip: whenever I get dressed, I hear Coco Chanel telling me to take one thing off before leaving the house, because I do tend to overdo it. Tonight? I’ve decided not to take anything off!
