Brace yourself, this one is strong. It comes from my New York Bartender’s Guide, which I bought in 1997, and it has been made in my household for nearly 30 years. You’ll find other ‘Cardinal’ recipes online, but this is the original as far as I’m concerned.

Ingredients

Serves 1

  • 80ml white rum (two double shots)
  • 20ml triple sec
  • 20ml Disaronno (amaretto)
  • ½ tsp grenadine
  • 40ml lime juice
  • Ice
  • Lime slice, to garnish (optional)

Method

  1. Pour everything over ice in a cocktail shaker, put the lid on and give it a good shake.
  2. Strain into a cocktail glass that’s been chilling in the freezer.
  3. Garnish with a slice of lime, if you can be bothered.

Jules’s tip

Keep your cocktail glass in the freezer – a very cold glass makes all the difference.

Cheers! – Jules x
