I’ve had lots of questions about Paxos, and I’m happy to share because – let’s be honest – it takes a bit of effort to get there. You fly to Corfu, hang around in the port, then take a ferry for a couple of hours. It takes a whole day, so if you’ve only got a week I wouldn’t bother. Give it ten days to a fortnight.

(And to the few snarky comments about me “ruining” Greece by talking about it: islands like these are a bit like Cornwall – they earn most of their money in the summer. Greece is there for everyone!)

My Paxos highlights:

  • Lakka – the horseshoe bay at the top of the island where the yachts come in at night. Sit on the quay and watch them make a hash of mooring. That used to be me!
  • Loggos – halfway down the island and beautiful. Paxos has got expensive, so walk up a side street to find somewhere a little cheaper than the quayside restaurants.
  • Gaios – the main port, where the ferries come in. The busiest and the most fun.
  • A little taverna inland, in the middle of nowhere, run by Yorgos – waiter, cook and washer-upper all in one. Don’t expect speedy service, but it’s proper Greek food and absolutely fantastic.

My advice: if you’re lucky enough to be my age or pre-children, go out of season – May to June, or September to mid-October. I’ve been in mid-October and it was glorious.
