I adore this hard-wearing, handcrafted stoneware pottery. every piece is unique and I’ve used their pestle and mortar sets, spoon dishes and garlic storage containers for years. I know these precious things do, sometimes, get broken, but the tears soon dry when I find I can still re-order items from their online shop!
Muchelney Pottery was set up in 1965 by John Leach, eldest grandson of Bernard Leach. He designed, what has become, an iconic range of stoneware pots based on the simple strength of English country pottery. It has been produced and sold for 60 years.
After John died in August 2021, Mark Melbourne became the sole potter at Muchelney Pottery. John’s eldest son Ben Leach took over the running of the business with help from Nick Rees’s daughter, Rachael who manages the office. The ‘pottery crew’ are continuing in the ethos of John’s designs and working practices, carrying on the rich pottery tradition he created in Muchelney.
